Precepting in the Real World. Teaching Clinical Thinking Without Slowing Down Program 222
Program Description
Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists.
Precepting in the real world plays a vital role in shaping competent, confident pharmacists by bridging the gap between classroom learning and everyday practice. Through hands-on guidance, pharmacists who serve as preceptors model clinical decision-making, ethical judgment, time management, and effective communication with patients and healthcare teams. Real-world precepting exposes learners to the complexities of workflow, interprofessional collaboration, and patient-centered problem solving that cannot be fully captured in textbooks. By mentoring students and residents in authentic practice settings, pharmacist preceptors not only help develop practical skills and professional identity but also strengthen the future of the profession through teaching, leadership, and example.
At the end of this presentation pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians should be able to:
1. Describe key principles of effective precepting that promote safe clinical decision-making, professional judgment, and readiness for practice across pharmacy settings.
2. Apply practical, time-efficient strategies to make clinical reasoning visible and guide learner reflection during routine patient care activities without disrupting workflow.
3. Demonstrate communication and feedback techniques that reinforce patient safety, professional accountability, and confidence when working with learners and team members from different training backgrounds.
4. Identify approaches to align expectations and support effective communication between preceptors and learners across generations while maintaining high standards of clinical practice.
