Superbugs – How to treat the worse of the worst infectious pathogens! Program 216

Program Description

Superbugs are bacteria that have developed resistance to multiple antibiotics, making infections caused by them difficult or even impossible to treat. The rise of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC), carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria, highlights the critical need for responsible antibiotic use. Appropriate antibiotic stewardship helps prevent the emergence of such resistant strains by ensuring antibiotics are used only when necessary and that the correct drugs and dosages are prescribed. Understanding culture and sensitivity reports is essential for guiding treatment choices, as these reports reveal which antibiotics are effective against a particular pathogen. For pathogens like KPC and CRE, selecting appropriate treatment regimens—often based on newer antibiotics or combination therapies—is crucial for effective management. As resistance continues to grow, it is also vital to be aware of newer antibiotics' coverage spectra, as these agents provide additional options for combating MDR pathogens, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing the spread of resistance.

At the end of this presentation pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be able to:

1)  To discuss the importance of appropriate antibiotic use to prevent multi-drug resistant pathogens

2)  To comprehend and read culture & sensitivity reports

3)  To understand appropriate treatment regimens for KPC, CRE, ESBL, etc.

4)  To identify the coverage spectrum of newer antibiotic agents which can be utilized for multi-drug resistant pathogens
