From Waistline to Heartline: Obesity and Its Cardiovascular Consequences. Program 211
Program Description
Obesity has a profound impact on cardiovascular health, increasing the risk of various cardiovascular conditions. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to influence patient outcomes through effective medication management, lifestyle intervention, and patient education. By understanding the complex relationship between obesity and cardiovascular disease, pharmacists can play a pivotal role in reducing cardiovascular risk and improving patient health.
At the end of this presentation, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be able to:
a. Recognize the relationship between obesity and cardiovascular risk
b. Assess signs and symptoms, laboratory tests and risk scores (including the ASCVD risk calculator) for obesity and cardiovascular disease
c. Explain the treatment options for managing obesity and associated cardiovascular risks, including non-pharmacologic treatment and medications
d. Explain the mechanism of action, adverse effects, clinical pearls, dosing, and monitoring parameters for medications used to manage obesity
