Take it to Heart with QT: A Prolonged Understanding of QTc Management. Program 219
Program Description
Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists.
Take it to Heart with QT: A Prolonged Understanding of QTc Management emphasizes the pharmacist’s critical role in identifying, preventing, and managing drug-induced QT prolongation, a condition that can predispose patients to life-threatening arrhythmias such as torsades de pointes. Pharmacists must recognize high-risk medications and patient-specific risk factors, monitor QTc intervals when initiating or adjusting therapy, and collaborate with providers to recommend safer alternatives or dose adjustments. By counseling patients on symptoms such as palpitations, syncope, or dizziness and ensuring appropriate follow-up, pharmacists serve as the frontline in mitigating cardiac risks while optimizing therapeutic outcomes. This proactive approach highlights the pharmacist’s expertise in balancing efficacy with safety in cardiovascular care.
At the end of this presentation pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be able to:
· Describe the pathophysiology of QT interval prolongation along with associated risk factors
· Review available primary literature for proper assessment and calculation of the QT interval
· Discuss various strategies for mitigating risk factors with QT prolongation to provide safe and effective patient care
· Evaluate resources for evidence-based decision making in the setting of a prolonged QT interval
