The Golden A-B-E: Updates to the COPD GOLD Guidelines. Program 203.
Program Description
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory condition that is characterized by obstructed airflow from the lungs. It is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and is associated with significant healthcare costs.
To address the management of COPD, the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) was formed in 1998. GOLD is a collaboration between the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Overall, the GOLD guidelines play a crucial role in the management of COPD, providing healthcare providers with a framework for diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, and helping to improve outcomes for patients with this chronic respiratory condition.
Participant Program Objectives
1. Review the definition of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
2. Recommend an appropriate initial pharmacologic regimen for a stable COPD patient
3. Develop an appropriate treatment plan for a patient with COPD exacerbation
4. Discuss a pharmacist’s role in the prevention and management of COPD
