Title: From TikTok to the Pharmacy: Fighting Medication Misinformation.  Program 226

Program Description

Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists.

Pharmacists play a critical role in addressing medication misinformation on social media, particularly on short-form video platforms such as TikTok, where brief, engaging content can spread inaccurate or oversimplified claims rapidly to large audiences. Patients may encounter misleading information about prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, dietary supplements, vaccines, and weight-loss therapies from influencers, product sellers, unqualified creators, anecdotal testimonials, or content presented without appropriate clinical context. Such misinformation can contribute to medication nonadherence, inappropriate self-treatment, delayed medical care, harmful interactions, incorrect dosing, and other unsafe medication practices. Pharmacists can reduce these risks by asking patients what they have seen or heard, listening without judgment, acknowledging legitimate concerns, explaining the evidence in clear and accessible language, correcting inaccuracies respectfully, and using shared decision-making to recommend trustworthy information and a safe treatment plan.

At the end of this presentation pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians should be able to:

1. Describe the scope and impact of medication misinformation on social media platforms, particularly short-form video platforms such as TikTok.

2. Identify common types and sources of medication misinformation encountered by patients, including misleading claims related to prescription drugs, OTC products, supplements, vaccines, and weight-loss therapies.

3. Recognize the potential clinical and patient-safety consequences of medication misinformation, including nonadherence, inappropriate self-treatment, delayed care, and unsafe medication use.

4. Apply effective communication strategies to address misinformation respectfully and build patient trust without dismissing patients' concerns.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
