Let’s Get Explicit about Implicit Bias. Program 224
Program Description
Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists.
“Let’s Get Explicit About Implicit Bias” highlights how unconscious attitudes and stereotypes can subtly influence pharmacists’ clinical decisions, communication, and patient interactions, often without their awareness. These biases may affect how pharmacists counsel patients, assess pain, recommend treatments, or build trust, potentially contributing to disparities in healthcare outcomes. The piece emphasizes the importance of recognizing and actively addressing implicit bias through self-reflection, cultural competence training, and deliberate changes in practice, such as using standardized protocols and engaging in empathetic, patient-centered communication. By making the implicit explicit, pharmacists can better ensure equitable care, strengthen patient relationships, and uphold their role as accessible and trusted healthcare professionals.
At the end of this presentation pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians should be able to:
- 1. Define the mechanisms and manifestations of implicit bias
- 2. Explain the impact of implicit bias in health care and population health
- 3. Review methods for reducing negative impact of implicit bias
